Seven Years, a Few Days
Genesis measures Jacob's service twice in one sentence, once by the calendar and once by his heart.
Scripture Genesis 29:15–20
“So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days because of his love for her.”
Genesis keeps both measurements in one sentence. The calendar says seven years, and the text does not round it down. Jacob’s heart says a few days. Neither cancels the other.
Jacob named the price himself. Laban asked what his wages should be, and Jacob offered seven years for the younger daughter. The work was the same work any hired man would have done. Love changed how long it felt.
The chapter will not let this become a greeting card. The morning after the wedding there is Leah, and seven more years to serve. Love shortened the waiting in Jacob’s experience. It did nothing about Laban.
Still, most of us have lived by both clocks. The same afternoon can drag or vanish depending on whom it is for. Genesis writes the two clocks side by side and tells us which one Jacob went by.
