Biblical Wisdom
No Escort at Ahava
Ezra’s confession before the king did not become swagger at the river. It became fasting, humility, and prayer.
Scripture Ezra 8:21–23
Ezra’s problem begins with his own testimony. He had told the king, “The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who forsake Him.” Once those words were spoken, a royal escort would have said something too.
But Ezra does not answer the tension by acting fearless. At the Ahava Canal, before the caravan moves, he says, “And there by the Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.”
The request is almost tender in its detail: us, our children, all our possessions. Faith is not made vague enough to sound brave. It names the people who could be harmed and the goods that could be lost.
“So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He granted our request.” Integrity may close one door. Prayer does not pretend the road has become safe.
