Today's reflection

The sentence is usually read as worship. It is closer to alarm.

Jacob is running. He has deceived his father, taken what belonged to his brother, and left home with what he could carry. He stops because the sun went down, not because the place meant anything. He takes a stone from the ground and sleeps.

Then the dream, and the promises, and this on waking.

“I was unaware of it” is the part worth slowing over. Jacob does not say God arrived. He says God was already there and he had not known. The place did not become holy because something spiritual happened to him. He simply found out what had been true of it while he slept through it.

There is a version of this text that gets read at building dedications, which turns it into a compliment paid to a location. That reading has the direction backwards. Nothing about Bethel was prepared. Nothing about Jacob was deserving. The point of the scene is that the God of Abraham turned up in a place with no altar, to a man with a bad record, who was asleep at the time.

What follows is almost comic. Jacob makes a vow with conditions attached, offering loyalty if God will provide food and clothing and bring him home safely. He has just been promised far more than that, unconditionally, and he negotiates anyway.

The text lets that stand without comment.
