Too Many Men for Victory

The Lord reduced Gideon’s army because victory posed its own danger: Israel might remember salvation as self-rescue.

Scripture Judges 7:2–7

Before Gideon ever fights Midian, the Lord names the danger. It is not that Gideon has too few soldiers. It is that he has too many.

“You have too many men for Me to deliver Midian into their hands, lest Israel glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’”

So the army is reduced once, then again. Fearful men go home. The rest are taken to the water, where the Lord says, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there.”

The number that remains is almost painfully small: three hundred. Strange as it looks, the smaller army is mercy. God is guarding the memory of the victory before the victory happens.

Success is dangerous when it gives us a story we can tell without God. Sometimes the Lord’s kindness is to make the math unmistakably weak.
